A verified chain proves the log is internally consistent — but anyone able to edit the database could edit an event and recompute every hash after it, and the chain would still verify. An anchor is the head hash as it stood at a point in time. Because rewriting an event changes every hash after it, a rewrite makes previously published anchors stop matching. Record a head hash below and re-check it later — a copy held outside this system is the part the operator cannot alter.
